Before sharing Snowflake data with partners: scope, updates and termination conditions

Partner data sharing requires more than connectivity. Define what is shared, who maintains it and when access ends. Prepare scope and acceptance tests for a Snowflake-based implementation.

Define the information boundary before connecting an external partner. Before exposing an operational sales table, confirm the fields, granularity and refresh frequency the partner actually needs. Document both activation and termination conditions so estimates can be compared on an operational basis.

Sharing fundamentals in the official documentation

Snowflake Secure Data Sharing exposes selected database objects to other Snowflake accounts. Shared objects are read-only, and the provider can revoke access to a share. Direct shares target accounts in the same region, so the recipient’s environment is an input to choosing the sharing method.

Snowflake: About Secure Data Sharing

The following is For f’s requirements guidance. A sharing feature does not imply automatic control over secondary use or previously distributed files. Separate technical controls from operational agreements with the recipient.

Work back from the partner’s decision

For replenishment decisions, establish whether the recipient needs product-and-location stock levels and freshness timestamps or also needs individual customer information. Specify units, missing-value meanings and cancellation treatment. Assign a reviewer for schema changes so newly added source fields are not exposed unintentionally.

Align refresh timing with business cutoffs

Visible data is not necessarily finalized data. Define expected refresh timing, delay indications and correction handling. If the recipient runs a morning report, specify how to determine that refresh is complete and how to pause reporting when the previous day remains provisional.

Agree on the end of sharing before starting

Define who decides and performs suspension after a contract ends, responsibility changes or accidental exposure occurs. Test that the recipient can no longer retrieve data after revocation. Separately agree on retention and deletion confirmation for copies the recipient already holds; access revocation alone should not be treated as resolving that issue.

Illustrative example: a wholesaler sharing stock with retailers

Assume that retailers receive stock for their product range, excluding procurement costs and other partners’ terms. Pilot one recipient and one product group, with samples of fields to include and exclude. Test product additions, stockouts, late refreshes and suspension, identifying ambiguous fields that hinder ordering decisions. This is not a real customer case.

Inputs and deliverables for procurement

  • Provider and recipient accounts, regions and intended usage
  • Definitions of shared fields, excluded fields and refresh ownership
  • Activation, change and revocation procedures, with tests performed from the recipient side

Separate sharing configuration from source-data preparation, field documentation, recipient verification and refresh-failure communication. Recipient availability for testing also affects the estimate. Include operational contacts and change-notification procedures in the handover so the arrangement survives staffing changes.

Does read-only sharing eliminate the need to review fields?

No. Preventing source-data changes is different from deciding whether confidential fields may be disclosed. Define the necessary scope and inspect results using the recipient’s actual privileges. Consider validating operations with a small sharing unit before expanding to every department or partner.
