Do not count booking clicks as meetings: measuring B2B inquiries with GA4 and BigQuery

Evaluate whether articles and landing pages lead to inquiries. Separate impressions, clicks, successful submissions, confirmed bookings and held meetings, and make measurement gaps explicit.

For lead-generation analysis, first define the event being counted as an outcome. Opening a booking page, successfully submitting a form, confirming a booking and attending a sales meeting are different events. Before grouping them as conversions, document how each is observed and where visibility is missing.

What exporting GA4 data to BigQuery provides

The official documentation describes exporting Google Analytics events to BigQuery and combining them with external data. Exported raw events do not include every enhancement applied in the Analytics interface. Do not design reporting on the assumption that interface and BigQuery figures will always match.

Google Analytics: BigQuery Export

The following is For f’s measurement guidance. Installing tools does not guarantee more inquiries. The aim is to test improvement hypotheses against records that can actually be collected.

Count five stages separately

  • Impression: define when an article card or CTA counts as visible and record that event
  • Click: identify the article and placement from which the visitor navigated
  • Successful submission: distinguish starting a form or pressing submit from completed acceptance
  • Confirmed booking: count only when a confirming record is available from the booking system
  • Held meeting: use sales-confirmed attendance records, separating cancellations and no-shows

Keep personal information out of analytics events

Google’s guidance prohibits sending personally identifiable information such as email addresses to Analytics and highlights URLs and user input as potential sources. Limit measurement fields to items such as article IDs, placements and service categories; do not embed inquiry text or names in event names or URLs.

Do not invent links between disconnected records

If only clicks to an external booking service are available, label the metric as navigation to the booking page. Linking confirmed bookings or meeting records requires separate checks of integration capabilities, identifiers and handling conditions. When records cannot be linked, show separate counts without implying a known person-level journey.

Illustrative example: comparing article thumbnails

Suppose thumbnails are compared in the same article-list position. Click totals alone cannot separate the effect of more exposure. Calculate click-through rate only when impression counts are available for the same period and placement. Without impressions, report clicks and do not claim a CTR improvement.

Also review transitions from articles to consultation separately from the substance of actual inquiries. If readership grows but inquiries are outside the target service scope, consider testing changes to the intended audience and consultation CTA as well as the headline. This explains an analysis method, not For f’s measured results.

Measurement deliverables to request

  • A measurement specification covering event names, triggers, deduplication and reporting periods
  • Tests for success, failure and reload behavior, with a list of unmeasured areas
  • Reports separating inquiries, bookings and meetings, plus operational review procedures

Is BigQuery necessary from the start?

Not necessarily. If existing analytics and inquiry records answer the business question, start by fixing event definitions and collection. Consider a data platform when the need for ongoing reconciliation across systems becomes clear. For a consultation, describe your analytics, form and booking tools and the decision you want to make.
